How much profit is an organization missing out on? Gifford Brown from the Ford Motor Company developed the 1-10-100 Rule. This rule means that every $1 spent up front during engineering to reduce maintenance eliminates a later $10 cost to maintain equipment properly or $100 in breakdown maintenance. This can have a profound impact on an organization.
So why is it often ignored? In my experience, it is a lack of understanding the value of designing for reliability, or the lack of knowledge in what is required to design for reliability. One can have an impact on reliability by asking simple questions during a design review, let alone an FMEA.
It is the goal of these posts to provide an awareness of the impact of designing for reliability and how it can be done from a practical standpoint. Well, these posts are not exhaustive, they should get you thinking about what you can do in your organization immediately.
