There comes a time in everyone’s reliability ‘journey’ where it is either too hard or too expensive to keep perfecting your product, system or service. Steel can only be ‘so’ pure. Clearances can only be ‘so’ accurate. Surfaces can only be ‘so’ smooth. And software can only be ‘so’ perfect. In fact it might turn out to be better and cheaper to have two ‘average’ components with one acting as a backup to the other. The ‘premium’ component might be too expensive or otherwise not as reliable as the backup system. Welcome to fault tolerance! There are times when companies look for bringing in a new piece of equipment or implement a system that makes their work easier. They install it properly and put a lot of effort into making that equipment work with the other systems in place but the results still don’t meet their expectations. So, what else can they do to make the outcome desirable? That is what should be taken into account in the design phase because if you have the design exactly right, it is easier to fix things when failures occur.

This episode is about designing for reliability. It has been proven over time that the best inventions are designed properly after planning them and before implementation — even in the earlier times people used to draw things before they actually made them. After you have done an analysis of the equipment, there is not even close to good probability to make that product completely reliable. That is why a good design should be made before developing anything for which companies hire professional designers and good ones have their own designing teams too.
