Fundamentals of Reliability Performance Monitoring
Monitoring reliability performance requires both measurement and reporting skills. Focusing on making decisions we can tailor our metrics to improve our reliability program today. The right measures allow your team to spot problems and solve them.
Your customers measure the reliability of your products every time they use your product. The measure is often ad hoc and creates an experienced based impression of your product’s reliability. If you want to improve your customer’s impression of your product’s reliability you have to understand and monitor the reliability performance of your product.
Some reliability measures are forward-looking, some are looking back at what has occurred. None are perfect, yet many are useful for specific situations or classes of decisions. If the cost of unreliability is of concern, creating estimates expected repairs and spares may provide insights into the current design decisions. Tracking actual occurrence of repairs along with spare use provide feedback on your estimation process, plus helps you identify unexpected usage possibly signaling a previously unknown problem to solve.
Let’s explore a range of reliability and maintainability measures including when and how they can help you solve problems and make improvements to your product and program.
