My guest on this episode is Tim Sheehan.
Tim is an extremely well-rounded quality engineer with significant experience in many facets of quality. More importantly, he has recently learned a set of skills that really makes him stand out from his peers and capable of designing, developing and delivering complete data solutions at his company.
With digital technologies gaining ground in the manufacturing floor, and pretty much everywhere these days, us in quality have this ever-growing need to become more data literate and even pick up advanced data skills, such as visualization, programming skills (e.g. SQL and R), setting up databases and data pipelines. And that’s exactly what Tim did; he took the initiative and picked up these skills and ended up delivering a much-needed custom data solution at his company essentially closing the gap between IT and the quality function.

– The difference between purchasing an off-the-shelf data solution from a vendor and being able to develop one in-house
– How the digital revolution is not necessarily just about data; it is still very much about people, for people.

Once we’ve decided to control something (think of our prevention and detection controls), we then need to decide how to measure it. Different controls may need different measuring requirements, which can give us discrete or continuous data.
We treat these data types differently when collecting it, determining sample sizes, and analyzing it for results. Tune-in to learn more about how to take the next step in defining controls: figuring out how to measure it and considering the data.

Analyzing our design concept for controls can be a great way to stay customer-focused and create products that are easy to use.
There are two basic buckets that we want to think of in terms of controls: prevention controls and detection controls. What are their differences and why do we differentiate between them? We explore this and take a look at risk, too.
In this episode, I speak with Dane Boers and discuss Weibull distribution. He provides some great examples to explain the different parameters of Weibull distribution, the characteristic life, and the shape parameter. I never thought that it could be made simple! We also talk about how we can use the outputs from a Weibull Analysis i.e. the probability of failure, to prevent equipment downtime.
