The Leadership Connection Host, Doug Plucknette, interviews reliability leader Robert Kalwarowsky in Episode 18 of this series. Robert started Rob’s Reliability Project (now Maintenance Disrupted) in 2018 and currently produces leadership & mental health content for the industrial community. Rob has spent almost 10 years as a reliability engineer & asset manager within mining, oil and gas, and consulting industries.
We can look at test methods like a product in and of itself. Because tests also have requirements and need to produce usable results, we validate against those requirements. Validating our test method also ensures that they are precise and accurate.
We talk about things to consider when looking at product tests: tying test methods to the product’s use environment, standards, and cumulative effects of testing.
Reliable products are also green. This is a relatively simple argument: If an item is designed and built well, it lasts a long time, thus avoiding landfills. Years ago, when living in northern Bavaria, the apartment had a full bedroom set. The entire set was both beautiful and functional. EMS provider Matric Group’s Patrick Stimpert incorporated the Toyota Production System’s Lean principles into his contract manufacturing business. Patrick states “Results are Important. How do I get my results? With the use of the Toyota Production System’s Lean principles and my simple rule “don’t waste time rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, go fix the problem”. I believe in the “LEAN-IN” processes and gain improvements through RIPs (Rapid Improvement Projects) These projects are based on a standard of identifying problems, brainstorming solutions, attempting those solutions, and adjusting from there. “If we are going to fail, we are going to fail fast and cheap.”
