47 – RCM Reengineered with James Reyes-Picknell & Jesus Sifonte

RCM Reengineered with James Reyes-Picknell & Jesus Sifonte

In this episode, the guests, James Reyes-Picknell and Jesus Sifonte talk about the RCM Reengineered that they have also explained in their book—to be launched on 20th April— with a lot of practical approaches as well. The RCM Reengineered is based on the original RCM technique to avoid and manage failures occurring during the asset management process, but it optimizes a lot of factors with a broad range of criticality measures and problems that come along with it. The RCM has been around for a long time and was developed to handle the safety issues in flights but RCM Reengineered focuses on the failures that are science-based and then it provides you with the exact solutions that must be implemented to achieve long-term and sustainable reliability operation depending upon the type of the industry.

It allows you to determine the depth of analysis you have to perform considering the criticality of failures that will occur. If they are the type that won’t affect you greatly, then you don’t have to do an in-depth analysis, waste time, and cost on it. You can perform a simple one instead that is enough to tell you what is going to go wrong and how you’re going to correct it.

It comes into action where your first step is to have lesser failures, higher productivity, lesser costs, safety concerns, and environmental improvement based performance. It tells you how to do the maintenance correctly because it has a huge impact on the overall businesses. RCM Reengineered ensures this by reducing the major surprises that can lead to failures in your projects and then damage your whole business.

This advanced approach to the rusty RCM that has been hardly improved since 90’s covers the shortcomings of the previous approaches but with a more focus on the industrial ranges and acceptance of the applications of RCM. The systems are now complex and need the effectiveness based on the industrial market while they are being implemented for the first time. So, RCM Reengineered addresses the need-based criticality by evaluating the failure mode and your assets so that you have to do only what is necessary to be done and not more than that. It not only reduces labor intensive issues but also ensures the true application of RCM where asset sensitivity varies from low to high.

It also provides you with standard-based guidelines to address different failure modes and the root causes to get optimum results from your analysis. It promotes formal risk management and decision making by the internal standard approaches that use historical data to handle the issues in asset management evidently. It also tells you how to apply the traditional RCM in the industrial environment with successful and effective implementation. In simple words, RCM Reengineered has improved the old RCM methods by linking them to the formal international standards. In doing so, it has made the statistical analysis much better by using experience-based programs.
