Checking Assumptions
Abstract
Greg and Fred discussing how assumptions in reliability and quality engineering are highly critical. We all know what assume can stand for: make an ‘ass of u and me.’
Key Points
Join Greg and Fred as they discuss how assumptions are a form of bias that needs to be understood and mitigated through transparency.
Topics include:
- We all make assumptions, which can turn into biases in problem solving and decision making.
- Why it’s important to understand and write down the assumptions in your problem solving and decision making.
- When assumptions are written and understood by stakeholders, then problem solving and decision making can be improved.
Enjoy an episode of Speaking of Reliability. Where you can join friends as they discuss reliability topics. Join us as we discuss topics ranging from design for reliability techniques to field data analysis approaches.

Writing it down. On to paper, off the mind. Assume as little as possible and state your assumptions in writing for the record. Any thoughts? We live in a world of variability. Risk is everywhere. Haste makes waste.

Hi Carl:
Good to meet you. We do homeland security forensics. We try to reconstruct decisions, understand why things happened, etc. The biggest challenge is that these ex post analyses are very diffcult. Why? Professionals and decision makers don’t write down their assumptions. We didn’t pass mind reading 101. So..
Yes. You’re right. We’re living in VUCA time – time of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, adn ambiguity.
HOller if you’ve got more questins.
