174-What is the CMRT with Terry Torrence

What is the CMRT with Terry Torrence

As a Reliability Engineer, you are always keen to learn something new and practice it to add to your professional experience. There are a lot of ways to get the kind of knowledge that you need to be good at your job. Online certifications are a trendy way to get skills these days. These certifications are especially beneficial for engineers who don’t have the time to register to a university and take classes there. There are many good platforms that provide such certifications to help you shine in your career. One of such certifications is Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician.

In this episode, we covered:

  • What is the CMRT?
  • What are the four main pillars of this body of knowledge?
  • What is the goal of CMRT?
  • And much more!

It is a body of knowledge designed by the Society or Maintenance and Reliability Professionals for a technician. It covers all the standard aspects that a technician is required to have in order to perform their daily tasks. It provides a basic framework to study electrical side of things such as energy systems and power management. It helps technicians to gain those multi-craft skills that would help them achieve a level of competence that separates them from common technicians. It is a technician’s job to know all the necessary skills to make sure that the machinery is running properly.

That’s why they should know all the aspects of an asset, whether those be electrical or mechanical. There are four main pillars of this body of knowledge for CMRT as broken down by the SMRP; Maintenance practices, preventive and predictive maintenance, troubleshooting and analysis, and corrective maintenance. The exam for CMRT is mostly based on safety topics and best practices, so any good technician who is familiar with the basics can pass the test. There are good sources out there that can help you pass the preliminary exam but you should always get started with something that you can easily digest.

When you are going into this exam, be sure to focus on your weaknesses and get at least the basics of any subject that you are weak in. Safe work practices are on the top of the list and environmental safety along with lubrication practices is a must to know about. The test consists of MCQs and if you have the understanding of basics as to how and why should something be used and how the applications can impact your assets, you should be good to go. Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance are also the leasing topics for CMRT.

Having good understanding and experience will help you greatly in this test because the main focus of the test is to give you insights about what you do on a daily basis. Technicians should be in the driver’s seat because they are the ones who spend the most time with the assets. The goal of CMRT is to bring the technicians on the front foot so that the managers can trust them to take care of certain things on their own. SMPR’s is hoping to bring those champions into the light who always do things right and take actions when they should.
