31 – The Role of Certifications in Maintenance & Reliability with Fred Schenkelberg

The Role of Certifications in Maintenance & Reliability with Fred Schenkelberg

In this episode, the topic of discussion is the role of certifications in maintenance and reliability. When it comes to knowledge, skills, and abilities, there is no boundary of course but being a certified professional is worth more than just being a technical person. It not only reflects a better resume but it also works as a proof in the reviews and portfolios that the person has all the basic knowledge about the job he is doing.

There are a lot of certifications in the industry to become a certified reliability professional. Some of these certificates matter a lot when you are working in the industry or some bigger organizations. Good ones of these are CMRP (Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional), CRE (Certified Reliability Engineer), CMRT, and much more. It is a fact that every organization and society of professionals have their own standards of hiring and they see different kinds of reliability programs in different ways. Even if the certifications have a little role when it comes to the application of what you have read and what have your learned but still it gives you a couple of advantages in the industry of professional reliability engineers and technicians.

  • The first thing about certifications is that these are offered by different online platforms which include exams based on MCQs. Now, these exams clearly don’t prepare you for things that ca be obtained from experience in the field and neither do these exams prepare you for fixing certain problems and taking a course of action in different scenarios. But no matter what the value of the certification is, it surely creates more opportunities for the seekers in the industry—Whether they took an online exam or had a degree from a well-recognized university– it is only a step towards learning advanced stuff and applying all this newly learned knowledge in their work which leads to the experience.
  • One can always start with a certification, have the basic body of knowledge such as leadership, business management, tools, work management, and then apply this in work groups. This not only gives the professional confidence but it also opens the doors to more training and learning. To prove what they have learned from all this book reading, they would obviously need to be good at what they do but at least having a certification means the person has passed the minimum requirements that are needed to work in the reputable organizations. No matter what the means are, people can learn to practically do all of this through so many platforms.
  • The terms and practices change from industry to industry but the general ones stay the same. So, the people who want to learn and practice in the best ways, they can observe the best practices in the organizations that are universal and focus on mastering them.
The real difference can be made by learning continuously whenever and wherever you can. Make mistakes and then improve them until you have mastered the knowledge that you gathered during all of the processes.
