136 – 5 Tips to Delegate without Fear with Lisa Brownlee

5 Tips to Delegate without Fear

Delegation is one of the most important pieces of leadership and organizational development. Delegation means that you are sharing the resources for the betterment of resources. It not only helps in organizational development but it also helps in individual growth of the employees. The thing with delegation is that it requires acceptance and willingness of the personnel to be successful. The other difficulty comes forth when there are individual agendas and egos are at stakes. Some people just have a hard time letting go of the control and power that they have. But overall, delegation is a key trait that helps you bring about the change management.

In this episode, we covered:

  • How to delegate task systematically
  • What is the proper delegation
  • What is WIIFM
  • How to deal with delegation
  • Delegate without fear
  • How you deal with changes when it comes to delegation
  • And much more!

It also means that you can develop an organizational culture that is adaptable to the initiatives and promotes growth at every level of the organization. Lisa Brownlee has some tips that can really help you in delegating stuff in a better way for the development of your organization. The first tip is to Convey for Wiifm. Wiifm is an acronym that trainers use to describe the benefits of a training program to the learners. It basically answers the very questions that every person who is delegated some work has in mind ‘what’s in it for me’.

The leaders really need to know what drives the people they are delegating a task. The managers can get to know their subordinates and connect on a level that keeps the employees motivated all the time. When you give someone a task that is comfortable for them and gives them an opportunity to learn something new, they really get into it. It means they will get the job done efficiently and skillfully. At other times, people might not be interested in certain tasks and doing certain stuff because it doesn’t fall under their skills or they just avoid the extra burden.

Then comes the second tip and that is to describe the assignment. The leaders need to understand that a quick drop and order isn’t always an effective way to get a job done. The person you are delegating something needs to understand the assignment completely. Only then he will be able to work on it. He needs all the help he can get so that he won’t feel under stress. Then the third tip is to check for understanding. The person who is assigned a task must understand what was conveyed to him/her. Otherwise, he will never be able to do it right.

To make sure of this, you can ask them if they have any questions or not. Sometimes, asking someone directly if they understood something or not is a good practice as well. The next tip is follow up which is a necessary part of every message that is delivered to someone. Having some informal conversation about the delegated task boots the confidence of a person. The last but the most important tip is to communicate the learning to everyone so that they would benefit from the experience and implement it in the future as well.
