90 – Uptime: Strategies for Excellence in Maintenance Management with James Reyes-Picknell Part 1

Uptime: Strategies for Excellence in Maintenance Management with James Reyes-Picknell Part 1

In every organization who is in the business of maintenance and reliability, the first challenge is always reducing the unnecessary downtime in the machines. There are a lot of strategies that engineers come with to get that level of excellence where they can truly achieve the desired uptime for their assets. For similar guidance such as in this endeavor is provided by James Reyes-Picknell’s book Uptime: Strategies and its latest edition contains a lot of knowledge about how to get your goals about keeping your workforce focused and getting the results that you want from your reliability and maintenance programs.

When you are looking for maintenance excellence, you always start from the simple things like take good care of your assets, clean them, lubricate them, and use them properly. You need to stay away from trouble and to do that there should be some standards for performance measurement of the assets. When you have affective performance measurement strategy, you know exactly what goes on with your equipment. When you know how your systems work and you plan and schedule their working, you can save a lot of financial cost that otherwise would be wasted in doing lengthy analysis later on if it fails.

Now all of this is a lot of work and most of the companies avoid it. They just do the easy things and when a failure occurs, they start patching things up blindly. That kind of approach can be avoid if the data is properly organized, performance is measured, and above all, there is an improvement plan in place for the development and implementation of everything new. That are the sort of things you need to strategize for if you are ever going to get a taskforce that can add value to the organization.

There are tools available that can enhance the performance of the already implemented systems and you can take advantage of new technologies like big data and cloud computing to help the maintenance department do their job in a better and effective way. People need to have some kind of a standard work routine or an advanced model for excellence to align the business process with the organizational goals. That is the only way the workers will know how to do the job in the best ways and what things to do when they are doing the compliance.

That’s why Uptime: Strategies helps you to do all these wonderful things to increase the uptime of your equipment and it tells you what activities to perform to achieve lower cost, have maximum production capacity, and make improvements that last longer. It can be used as a framework for your maintenance management programs. It contains guidance about new tools and technologies that can really make a difference by you following the international standards for excellence in asset management and to do regulatory compliance. In today’s world, only the most competent organizations survive and to be competent you need to stay ahead, updated, and promote best practices only.
