158 LORA with Lucas Marino

Level Of Repair Analysis with Lucas Marino

Most of the organizations in the maintenance and reliability industry have limited resources and they want to make the best use of what they have got. If the maintenance requirements of an organizations don’t match its resources, it is always going to result into an increased cost and decreased employee performance. The type of maintenance that an asset required throughout its life cycle needs to be performed in a balanced way. That’s why it is so important to have a maintenance philosophy when you are planning the life cycle cost of an asset. Level of Repair Analysis or LORA is a framework that helps you manage between maintenance cost and resources.

In this episode, we covered:

  • What is LORA?
  • How to start using LORA!
  • The value of having a maintenance philosophy!
  • And much more!

It is an activity-based standard business case model that uses repetitive analysis for engineers and maintenance managers to successfully implement and sustain their maintenance plans during the life cycle of a critical asset. It is a lengthy but cost-effective solution to a lot of maintenance strategy problems. It takes time to get the desired results from using LORA as the extended framework for enhanced business problem solution but it is worth the effort and time in the end. The best thing about LORA is that it starts at the acquisition stage where you can estimate all the requirements for successful maintenance of the asset and then, you can sustain it during the complete life cycle of that asset.

You can determine the level of maintenance, estimated cost, tool requirements, and personnel requirements for the best, planned asset maintenance and management. You can easily keep track of all the parameters and then take them a notch down if they exceed the maximum limit. You can gather data and after iterative analysis you can make intelligent business decisions as where and when to invest the resources that you have been given. With a robust analysis mechanism like this, you will be able to know when you are out of your depth.

What can you do to train your technicians better? You will need the help of OEMs sometime and other times, you will have to bring in SMEs who can train your engineers and technicians on how to do things better and differently. All of this will lead to building decision hierarchies that will help you know what’s and when’s of the events. Every single time you observe a change, you can update the LORA accordingly. It will tell you exactly where you are on the path and how far have you come. What further steps can you take to control everything before it gets out of your hand?

So, basically you are improving your decision-making skills here regarding your assets. It not only lays out your plans and performance right in front of you, it also tells you the economical and efficiency levels of your maintenance plans. All you need to do is integrate your data gathering system with this framework and it will help you improve your supply chain management. You can integrate your RCM analysis with it as well. You just need to know how to utilize all of this information wisely, focus on the implementation, and get things moving in the right direction.
