Condition monitoring is time-based solution to mitigating and preventing failures and it is a huge part of RCM or RCM R. RCM R is the advanced, updated version of RCM that entails predictive maintenance as the main technique to perform condition-based monitoring to improve asset performance. The reason that RCM and PDM fit together perfectly is because reliability can never be complete without having some sort of predictive maintenance method in place. Condition monitoring is the perfect tool for that. It also incorporates vibration analysis, oil analysis, and the use of infrared from time to time but it’s all a part of running PMs smoothly.

To start a predictive maintenance program, you need to have some tasks that need condition-based monitoring along with the right procedures. Then, you need to have the right people with good skills to carry out the tasks and last but not the least, you need to have the support of the management to increase resources. The organizations need to have a well thought-out plan before they get into predictive maintenance. They can start small by implementing PM on their critical assets and then you should be training people to make them part of the larger strategy.

The organizations would be able to see the results right away in terms of less downtime but the ROI would take some time to increase. There’s also a payback in terms of enhanced spare parts strategy. Ultrasound is the best technology out there to help you with the PdM program but if you have complex facility, you can use multiple technologies to ensure the results that you need. Ultrasound has wide range applications but vibrational analysis, oil analysis, and an infrared analysis program goes a long way to support a comprehensive predictive maintenance program.

Whatever you’re using, it should be based on the failure modes perspective of your organization. You need to know what you are looking for and what do you need from it? It would be great to integrate all these different tools and technologies into one system and then be able to see the combined results on one screen but there are limitation to everything and this is one of those ideas that is under progress for now. Your PdM program should be always be part of the planned strategy, otherwise it just wouldn’t work. You should have people with adequate skills and you will need to enhance those skills with proper training.

Once you have done this, you should make sure that both your PM and PdM program are synchronized. You should always start small, prove the benefits to everyone, and then build on it for successful implementation over the long time periods. Whatever you are doing, do it consistently and trend it. Data collection is vital part of successful PdM programs and it should be done carefully. It is the most basic yet the most important thing for gathering samples for analysis. You should always enlist the help of experienced consultants and subject matter experts for guidance
