Reliability Engineering versus Quality Engineering
podcast episode
Recently received a question about the differences, similarities, and which discipline is better concerning reliability and quality engineering. Some say reliability is a characteristic of quality, while I say reliability is quality yet over time.
Both use statistics, both support design or operations teams, both use an array of similar tools. At times the difference is really only on focus. Quality may focus on the consistent application of a specific color shade on a surface, whereas reliability focuses on that color lasting over time.
Let’s explore similarities and differences along with how to best work together to achieve results. Let’s discuss areas of overlap and confrontation. Let’s also examine how the different mindsets work, or don’t work when crossing from quality to reliability or vice-versa.
