Abstract

Kirk and Fred discussing the difficulty in getting to root cause of a component failures. In many cases a component failure is not due to a intrinsic failure mechanism in the component, but instead is due to a circuit application issue such as rapid voltage spikes or transients. They also discuss the issues with Li-ion battery failures in Samsung and Boeing leading to costly recalls and failures.

Key Points

Join Kirk and Fred as they discuss failures and in particular the problems with Li-ion batteries that caused a recent recall of the newest Samsung smartphone.

Topics include:

  • Factors in charging and the life of Li-ion batteries
  • The difficulty of accelerating chemically based failure mechanisms that are used in Li-ion batteries
  • Failures due to customers using products in a harsh or abusive environments may be difficult to anticipate and address.

Enjoy an episode of Speaking of Reliability. Where you can join friends as they discuss reliability topics. Join us as we discuss topics ranging from design for reliability techniques, to field data analysis approaches.
