Abstract

Kirk and Fred discussing the question many have, that is if margins are important, why not specify more strength in the product design?

Key Points

Join Kirk and Fred as they discuss how design engineers err on the side of having some margin above the specifications to allow for manufacturing variations, but how setting a higher design strength limit may not be necessary since there is significant margin with most standard materials in electronics assembly.

Topics include:

  • All electronics components have margins above specifications but  margin may not be known or consistent between types sources of components and suppliers
  • HALT shows the stress-strength margins and sometimes the design is a strong as it can be with standard materials, also know in HALT as the fundamental limit of the technology
  • Manufacturers environmental specifications may be extremely conservative and the the consumer or user is the ultimate judge of whether a product is robust enough

Enjoy an episode of Speaking of Reliability. Where you can join friends as they discuss reliability topics. Join us as we discuss topics ranging from design for reliability techniques, to field data analysis approaches.
