Reliability Program in Lean Product Development
Abstract
Chris and Fred discussing the role of reliability within a lean product development framework.
Key Points
Join Chris and Fred as they discuss how reliability activities fit into a lean product development framework.
Topics include:
- How to go fast in lean product development without sacrificing reliability.
- Reliability practices that apply within a lean product development framework.
- Designing reliability into the product.
Enjoy an episode of Speaking of Reliability. Where you can join friends as they discuss reliability topics. Join us as we discuss topics ranging from design for reliability techniques, to field data analysis approaches.

I have not read Eric Reis’ book, but from your comments in this podcast, it appears to be a misapplication of Lean Product Development to start ups and misses the key foundation of LPD. For a better understanding of LPD, go to the Lean Product and Process Development Exchange (LPPDE) site at http://www.lppde.org. This is a consortium of companies implementing and practicing Lean Product Development. They are meeting in Columbus, OH October 1-4, 2018, and web site will have the agenda.
Also, read the following books for the real LPD process:
The Toyota Product Development System by James Morgan and Jeffrey Liker
The Lean Product Development System by Ron Mascitelli
Lean Product Development was developed by Toyota to prevent problems by using knowledge based learning up front before committing to a concept. for development. It uses set based design and visual management as well as early risk assessment. By doing this, it eliminates to main source of waste in product development: redesign and and rework loops after the initial design fails. By using this approach, it helps improve reliability by finding and fixing problems earlier.
It is being used by more established companies rather than by startups.
Also, listen to my earlier podcast with Fred on Lean Product Development and Design Review Based on Failure modes from 2017.
I also did presentations at ASQ World Conference, ASME IMECE, The Applied Reliability Symposium and RAMS on reliability in Lean Product Development from 2011 – 2015. I have also done webinars with Hobbs Engineering on the topic (recorded versions available).

Hi John,
I appreciate your detailed feedback and the pointers for additional reading. I would love to touch base with you to discuss this topic further after my upcoming travels. Would you be available for a 30 minute discussion sometime in August?
Thanks,
Chris
