Abstract

Kirk and Fred discussing what engineers estimated stress and environmental use conditions and loads for long term use and reliability during new product development

Key Points

Join Kirk and Fred as they discuss Fred’s LED light bulb failures, corroded printer, and Kirk’s household appliance failures and what conditions and use environments are anticipated for each product.
Topics include:

  • Customers put a product where they need to use it, not really considering suggestions or specifications of the manufacturer.
  • How much load of food and material did dishwasher design engineers expect users to leave on the dishes or allow to get into the system (such as teabags)
  • Electronics systems built for Marine environments may have some conformal coatings to protect against salt spray but not much more change from typical use on land.
  • We can’t expect electronics and systems to withstand extreme stress events, although they can be very robust otherwise.

Enjoy an episode of Speaking of Reliability. Where you can join friends as they discuss reliability topics. Join us as we discuss topics ranging from design for reliability techniques, to field data analysis approaches.
