There are many different methodologies used to determine what maintenance should be done.

Once you include the variants, the number of methodologies can become overwhelming.   By the end of the podcast, you should have an overview of each methodology and when to use them.

The 4 primary methodologies that we see

  • Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM)
  • Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA)
  • PM Optimization
  • OEM Recommendations

Which one you use will ultimately depend on upon the level of capability in your organization.  Also, the criticality of the asset will play a huge role in selecting the maintenance strategy.

Asset Criticality is the impact on the organization in terms of Environmental, Health, and Safety, or operational consequences if the equipment experiences a functional failure.  Asset Criticality is based on the probability, severity and the ability to detect the failure.  The outcome is an RPN.

The equipment is then grouped into categories which dictate the strategy to be used.

Choosing the right methodology can be a determining factor between success and failure as it will allow you to develop the right strategy for your organization.  Without this strategy, your operation will not achieve the business goals,
