Recommended Books for Maintenance Reliability Engineers

Recently I asked for recommendations for books for maintenance reliability engineers. The following list, in no order, are the recommendations. Thanks to all who participated.

Books on ILS:

  • Integrated Logistics Support Handbook (McGraw-Hill Logistics Series) (ILS) uses R&M data to support maintenance planning.
  • A good book on ILS follows: Integrated Logistics Support Handbook (McGraw-Hill Logistics Series)  James V. Jones 1987, TAB Books Inc.

 

“Practical books”:

  • Optimal Replacement Policy (Study in Mathematics & Managerial Economics), D. W. Jorgenson, J. JH. McCall, and R. Radner, North Holland, 1967
  • Models of Preventive Maintenance (Study in Mathematics & Managerial Economics), Ilya B. Gertsbakh, North Holland, 1977
  • Maintenance, Replacement, and Reliability: Theory and Applications, Second Edition (Mechanical Engineering) 2nd edition by Jardine, Andrew K.S., Tsang, Albert H.C. (2013) Hardcover

… several by Andrew Jardine and Albert H. C. Tsang

  • An Introduction to Reliability and Maintainability Engineering by Charles Ebeling. Ebeling presents RMA with a balance of rigor (foundations) with application (that includes meaningful examples).
  • I recently found a book which I think has got ‘everything’ in RMA and that is Handbook of Performability Engineering by Krishna B. Misra.

 

Other books I found very helpful:

  • Reliability, Maintainability and Risk: Practical Methods for Engineers including Reliability Centred Maintenance and Safety-Related Systems, 8th Edition 8th edition by David J Smith,
  • Maintenance Best Practices by Ramesh Galati and Ricky Smith.
  • Patrick D ‘ Oconnor’ s Practical Reliability Engineering book is also good in a number of topics.
  • There is one book by John Davidson that’s not as popular called The The Reliability of Mechanical Systems.

The book is good for those in MRA of mechanical systems and components. I like his approach to FTA, RBDs, and FMECA.

  • Of course, the bible immediately came to mind; Reliability-Centered Maintenance by Nolan and Heap.

 

A couple of my favorites:

  • Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM): Implementation Made Simple by Neil B. Bloom
  • Making Common Sense Common Practice, Fourth Edition: Models for Operational Excellence, Fourth Edition:
  • Models for Operational Excellence by Ron Moore

 

Recommended for use:

  • I have used the Handbook of Reliability Engineering and Management 2/E by Grant Ireson and C Commbs,
  • Practical Reliability Engineering by Patrick O’Connor,
  • Applied Reliability, 2nd Edition (Electrical Engineering) by Paul Tobias and David Trindade.

Sometimes one source provides a better explanation and/or detail than others on a specific topic; it is good to know where to find specific references.

  • Maintenance Best Practices by R J Galati

 

 

And a few more after the initial posting:

  • System Reliability Theory: Models, Statistical Methods, and Applications, 2nd Edition (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics), M. Rausand and A. Høyland
  • Reliability-Centered Maintenance Second Edition, John Mowbray

      You’re welcome Tarun. If there is anything reliability engineering related you’re looking for, just let us know. I asked the question in a few places to gather ideas/input for the article based on receiving a few questions asking for book recommendations.
